Design terminology: Paper stock

Archival paper

Paper which is pH neutral or slightly alkaline, so it doesn’t deteriorate as fast as normal paper (ideal for annual reports or books). Also known as acid-free paper, alkaline paper and pH neutral paper.

Cast-coated paper

Paper which is pressed against a hot polished surface to gain a high gloss surface.

Coated paper

Clay or other substances are used to give paper a smooth finish, higher reflectivity and improved ink holding capability.
